Dodge teacher named National Elementary Art Educator of the year
Dodge Elementary Art Teacher Thom Knab has been named the 2018 National Elementary Art Educator of the year by the National Art Education Association (NAEA). He is also the NAEA Eastern Region Elementary Art Educator of the year. He will receive the awards March 22, 2018 at the 2018 NAEA National Convention in Seattle, WA. “There is no greater testament of your exemplary contributions to the field of visual arts education than being chosen for these prestigious awards,” said Deborah B. Reeve, EdD, NAEA Executive Director. “Your colleagues throughout the United States and abroad join the NAEA Board of Directors in applauding your leadership, commitment and service to the profession.”
Saying he would never let the chance go by to advocate for art education, Mr. Knab expressed excitement and gratitude in his remarks to the school board at its meeting January 9.
“People often ask me, ‘what do I teach’ and I say I teach children,” he said. “I teach children through art and through art, I teach them how to make good judgements. I teach them that there can be multiple solutions to problems, that we can have diverse perspectives. Art allows us to express what words and numbers can’t always capture.”
“These awards are very much a recognition of a team effort,” he said. “I have great colleagues at Dodge and very talented art colleagues throughout the district who have really influenced who I am.”
Mr. Knab has been teaching at Dodge for 28 years. He thanked past and current school boards and administrators for their continued support of art education in Williamsville.
