Maple West Wins National Award as Top PTA School of Excellence

The National PTA recognized Maple West Elementary as the top 2018 School of Excellence and Phoebe Apperson Hearst Outstanding Family-School Partnership Award winner.

Maple West earned the national honor for its focus to make their PTA more inclusive to English Language Learner families. The PTA, in collaboration with school administrators, staff members and other experts, offered translation services, expanded its communication channels, and enlisted the help of teachers to share information about upcoming PTA events directly with ELL families. The result was an overwhelming increase in family engagement of both ELL and non-ELL families at Maple West.

As the 2018 Phoebe Apperson Hearst Outstanding Award winner, Maple West will receive $2,000 to further increase parent involvement in the PTA and foster a climate of inclusion.  The Hearst Foundation will also sponsor two Maple West PTA members at the national convention in Columbus, Ohio later this year for the award ceremony.

“The partnership between home and school is the most important component to ensure a child’s success,” said Principal Dr. Charles Galluzzo. “Experience shows that student success is achieved at a greater rate when a child’s parents are engaged in their education.  Our Maple West family views every day as new opportunity to foster a positive home-school relationship”.
