NYSED Priorities

Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, school districts around the state are mandated to fully implement New York’s comprehensive reform initiatives aimed at improving student achievement.

Many of these reforms were driven by the federal Race to the Top (RTTT) competition. New York was among nine states and the District of Columbia to win a federal Race to the Top grant and  received nearly $700 million to implement its reform agenda. According to U.S. Department of Education the Race to the Top competition rewards states that are leading the way in comprehensive, coherent, statewide education reform across four key areas:

  • Adopting standards and assessments that prepare student to succeed in college and the workplace; (common core learning standards)
  • Building data systems that measure student growth and success and inform teachers and principals how to improve instruction; (Data Driven Instruction/Inquiry Teams)
  • Recruiting, developing, rewarding, and retaining effective teachers and principals, especially where they are needed most; (Teacher and Principal Evaluation – APPR) and
  • Turning around their lowest-performing schools (does not apply to Williamsville)
