Vision and Mission of the Williamsville Central School District Special Education Department

The Vision of the Williamsville Central School District Special Education Program is to ensure a district-wide model of excellence that fosters individual student success and well-being, and meets the unique needs of all students in the least restrictive environment.

The Mission of the Williamsville Central School District Special Education Program is to ensure access to fair, equitable, and high-quality K-12 education and effective communication with all stakeholders.

Supports for All StudentsAll students are general education students; some students may require interventions or services to gain access, participate and show progress in the curriculum.  The support and interventions provided shall address the need in any area, impacting their ability to participate in the school setting (ex: academic, behavioral, communication, social-emotional, physical), prior to any referrals to the Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS).

Concerns in the Classroom

A Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is present in each building and has an established process to ensure that our students are provided with the appropriate interventions to access their education. Parents are informed/communicated with at the onset of any concern.

Educators share concerns with a multi-member team regarding student needs in the areas of academics, social-emotional, behavioral, speech, fine motor skills, sensory regulation, or physical needs. MTSS members may include classroom teachers, school psychologists, administrators, and specialists. During meetings specific data points are shared with the team (ie: intervention data, benchmarks) to help determine if and what targeted interventions are considered/implemented. Supports are reviewed and adjusted as needed. Data trends are reviewed to determine the rate of progress (positive or negative).

Students should be provided appropriate and targeted opportunities for academic assistance, social-emotional support, and behavioral interventions so that they may achieve success in their educational experience. A comprehensive approach to identifying, targeting, and reviewing students’ needs to address learning barriers.

Services shall be made available to students with disabilities on the same basis as all other students.

Committee on Special Education (CSE)

The Williamsville Central School District acknowledges the responsibility and importance of providing a high-quality educational program to students with disabilities.  We also fully recognize the rights of students with disabilities to obtain a free, appropriate public education (FAPE).

Students residing within the Williamsville Central School District who are classified as having a disability in accordance with Part 200 Regulations of the Commissioner of Education are provided with appropriate special education and/or related services within the least restrictive environment necessary to address their specific needs.  Every consideration is given by the Committee on Special Education (CSE) to provide special education services at the child’s home school and/or within the boundaries of the Williamsville School District.

It is the intent of the Williamsville Central School District to provide a continuum of services to students with disabilities.  The continuum varies from full inclusion within general education classes to full-day placement in center-based, agency-operated programs including home/hospital-based instruction.  The CSE determines placement based on individual student strengths, challenges, goals, desired learning outcomes, and required support.

Creating an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)

The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is a written document developed by the Committee on Special Education. The IEP is used to document and review student progress.  It summarizes a child’s current strengths, skills and abilities, establishes educational goals for the school year, and describes services and supports designed to meet those goals.
