Bargaining Unit: Williamsville Teachers' Association
The Williamsville Central School District has several licensed Occupational Therapists (OT), Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTA) and Physical Therapists (PT) that provide services to students across the District. These services are determined necessary through the Committee on Special Education.
School-based occupational therapy and physical therapy services are designed to enhance the student’s ability to gain access to their education when deficits in these areas are noted through various formal and informal assessments. Federal and State mandates indicate that occupational therapy and physical therapy in schools are to be educationally relevant. Determining the need for occupational therapy or physical therapy includes assessing a student’s ability to meet the demands of the educational program and setting.
Occupational therapy services generally address a student’s need for improving skills needed to complete classroom tasks through development or refinement of fine motor skills, social skills, sensory processing, or self-regulation skills as a foundation for independence with daily routines and activities within the school setting.
Physical Therapy services generally address a student’s posture, muscle strength, mobility, and organization of movement in the educational environment.
