Understanding  NYS-CCLS

In January 2011, New York State became one of forty-five states that adopted the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics. These standards, developed by teachers, administrators, and content experts from across the US, lay out a set of expectations for what students should know and be able to do in each grade level in order to graduate “college and career ready.”

Since the adoption of these standards, WCSD teachers and administrators have been working to implement the Common Core Learning Standards in our classrooms. This work involves substantial “shifts” in the design and delivery of instruction. Students are being asked to do new things in new ways, often to a higher level of complexity and rigor. The links below will help you to understand some of those changes.
