CCLS: Literacy in History & Social Studies
In January of 2011, The New York State Board of Regents approved the New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts (ELA) and Literacy; the New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics; and the New York State Prekindergarten Learning Standards.
The Common Core Standards include standards for literacy in history/social studies. In grades K-5, literacy standards are defined in the Common Core Standards for ELA. Beginning in grade 6, the ELA standards branch off and include specific standards for literacy in history/social studies, as well as in science and technical subjects. Over the next school year, Williamsville's social studies curricula will be revised to include the Common Core Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies. Full implemention of the New York State Common Core Learning Standards began in 2012-13.
