Emergency closing information for WCSD schools

With winter weather upon us, it's a good time to refresh information about school closings due to bad weather conditions.

The decision to close schools due to inclement weather is made by the superintendent, usually before 6 a.m.  The safety of students and staff is the basis for any decision. Key factors include road conditions, as reported by the Amherst Police and District Transportation departments, as well as current and forecast weather conditions for the Amherst area (i.e. northern Erie County).

When the decision to close schools is made, the news is announced as follows:

 - e-Alert notice to all subscribers
-  Social media posts (Twitter and FB)
- Local television and radio stations are notified
- District website post

The fastest way to get the news about a snow day is via eAlert, social media, or the district website. Television stations run an alphabetical crawl of school closings across the bottom of their screens and it can take some time for the list to reach the W's!   Luckily, most media outlets also post updated closing lists on their websites for quick reference.

For more information about school closings due to inclement weather, visit the district's Emergency School Closing webpage

Parents and guardians are encouraged to sign up for eAlerts, sent via text, email or both, by going to the emergency notification sign-up page.
