01-25-22 Mask Update to Families and Staff

January 25, 2022

Dear Williamsville Central School District Families and Staff,

I want to thank you for your patience and understanding - especially as it relates to new information regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.  As many of you have read in the news and on social media, last night, the New York State Supreme Court ruled the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) exceeded its authority in enacting the mask regulation.  Earlier today, the State Appellate Court announced it will decide on a request for a stay today or tomorrow.  We have also received direction from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) indicating schools should continue to follow the mask rule.

I want to be clear, this decision does not impact local mandates.  All schools in Erie County are still required to adhere to the Erie County mask mandate under the emergency orders enacted by Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz.

Masks are still required to be worn while on the school bus and on school grounds at all times by students, faculty, and staff, unless eating or drinking.  Students or staff members who do not have a mask when they arrive at school are provided with one.  If students refuse to wear a mask, parents/guardians are asked to pick them up from school.

We know the last two years have been exhausting for everyone!  Please continue to remain patient and show grace.  Our teachers, faculty, and staff continue to work diligently to ensure we are maintaining educational environments that are healthy and safe for all of our students and staff.  With reducing COVID-19 numbers in Erie County, there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Dr. Darren J. Brown-Hall
Superintendent of Schools
