Welcome to the weekly update!

As we wrap up Hispanic Heritage Month, this week we celebrated and recognized Sylvia Mendez, whose lawsuit ended school segregation in California and paved the way for the desegregation of schools nationwide.

In the mid-1940’s, Sylvia’s parents tried to enroll her in Westminster Elementary School in California.  The family was denied and told to enroll her in a school for students of Mexican heritage.  They soon hired lawyer David Marcus and were joined by four other Mexican-American families in a lawsuit against the Orange County School District.

In 1946, the families won their case with a federal judge ruling that the school district could not segregate Hispanic students.  This ruling in Mendez Vs. Westminster was used by Thurgood Marshall, as he successfully argued that racial segregation was unconstitutional in Brown Vs. Board of Education, which helped end the segregation of schools nationwide.

Learn more about Sylvia Mendez by watching the video project in the weekly newsletter, on social media, or the District website!

For our families and student-athletes, Winter Sports sign-ups officially opened today for varsity and junior varsity!  Modified sign-ups open next Friday, October 21st.  If you have any questions regarding athletics or sign-ups, be sure to contact the District Athletic Director Chris Mucica or reach out to your respective high school athletic department.  Contact information was WITSmailed to families on Tuesday!

I also want to share that the PTSA Holiday Craft Show is scheduled to take place December 3rd and 4th at Heim Elementary and Middle Schools!  An informational flyer is available in the weekly newsletter!  Like the PTSA, we are excited that this event has returned and can’t wait to see the incredible crafts our school community showcases!

As we head into the winter months, if you haven’t already done so, please be sure to sign-up for District eAlerts.  This is how you will be notified of delays and cancellations in the event of inclement weather.  If you have any questions about your account or whether you’re signed up, please contact the parent help desk by calling 716-626-8058.  Information on District eAlerts was also sent to families and staff prior to the start of the school year.

Finally, I want to remind our students, families, faculty and staff, that if you would like your question asked during the Superintendent Q&A please e-mail contact@williamsvillek12.org by Wednesday of each week.  If you have building specific questions, please be sure to reach out to your principal, assistant principals, counselors, or the appropriate department.

Another big matchup this weekend for the Bills as they head back to Kansas City.  Go Bills – and we’ll see you next week!
