NEW – ECDOH HEALTH ALERT: ERIE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND KALEIDA HEALTH ALERT COMMUNITY TO TRIPLE THREAT OF PEDIATRIC RESPIRATORY ILLNESSES

Welcome to the Weekly Update!

November is a busy month for the District!

First, is the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, November 8th at the District Office.  As always, the meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and streamed on the District’s YouTube channel.  During the meeting, I’ll update the community on Transportation, Regents Exams, and District Rebranding, including our progress on the mission and belief statements and logo design.  If you would like to share your thoughts on the next logo, please e-mail contact@williamsvillek12.org.  Please keep in mind the logo will be simple, identifiable, and modern.

As always, the Board of Education meeting agenda and presentations are available on the District website and BoardDocs.

Next, on Thursday, November 10th, 10 Williamsville graduates will be inducted into the Williamsville Wall of Fame!  After having to pause this event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is exciting to honor and recognize the impact these alumni have had in Western New York and throughout the world!  This event will also be LIVE streamed on the District’s YouTube channel so our entire community is able to watch and celebrate these incredible individuals.

I also want to remind everyone there is no school on Friday, November 11th as we honor members of the Armed Forces on Veterans Day.  Additionally, I want to make sure our families and staff are aware that there is no school Wednesday, November 23rd, Thursday, November 24th, and Friday, November 25th due to the Thanksgiving Recess.  Classes will resume on Monday, November 28th.

Don’t forget!  Thursday, November 17th from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Heim Middle School is the first Speaker Series on Restorative Educational Practices. This event is being done in partnership with the PTSA Council. We look forward to sharing more on this important initiative and the impact it is having within our school community.

On Friday, November 18th from 3:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Forest Elementary School, the District will be hosting a COVID-19 vaccination clinic, which will include bivalent booster doses, in partnership with the Erie County Department of Health.  A WITS mail with information on how to sign-up was shared earlier today. Please to review this information and reach out if you have any questions.

This week’s Superintendent Q&A comes from Nadine.  She asks, “Isn’t there a way to use the large piece of land on the right of the lanes exiting South to make at least four lanes, two in and two out?”

In short, while we are always looking for ways to ensure ease of entrance and egress and a safe pathway for our students, staff, and community members, a project of this scope is not in the budget and is not planned anytime in the near future.  It would likely need to be part of a capital project proposal and require stakeholder approval.  In addition, South High School was designated as a Historic Landmark by the US National Register of Historic Places, and any changes may also need to be approved by the New York State Historic Preservation Office.

As this change could also impact the current traffic flow on Main Street, in-depth research and analysis with the Town of Amherst and New York State Department of Transportation would need to take place.  If you have questions or concerns about the traffic pattern at Williamsville South, please be sure to reach out to Princpal Boardman.

This week, in recognition of Native American Heritage Month, we highlighted the impact of Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte, who was the first Native American to receive a medical degree in the US.  After earning her degree, she helped establish the first Native American hospital without the use of federal funds.  In 1988, Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte Memorial Hospital was added to the National Register of Historic Places.  Five years later, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Enjoy the weekend and we’ll see you next week!
