06-07-23 NYSDEC Air Quality Alert Update to Families and Staff
June 7, 2023
Dear Williamsville Central School District Families and Staff,
Smoke from the ongoing wildfires in Canada is now impacting all of Western New York. As a result of this, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued an Air Quality Health Advisory. As a precaution, activities that were scheduled outdoors across the District today have been postponed, unless they were able to be moved indoors.
According to the NYSDEC, “exposure can cause short-term health effects such as irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and shortness of breath. Exposure to elevated levels of fine particulate matter can also worsen medical conditions such as asthma and heart disease.”
We will continue to monitor the situation and make any necessary adjustments for the health and safety of our students, staff, and school community.
If you have any questions regarding your school and activities, please reach out to your building administrators. Additional school building event updates, such as the rescheduling of field trips or field days, will be shared by your school.
Thank you for your understanding.
Sincerely,
Dr. Darren J. Brown-Hall
Superintendent of Schools
