Assessments and Grading

April 1, 2021

Dear Middle and High School Families,

We wanted to share some important information regarding student exams and grading as we approach these final months of the 2020-21 school year.

To allow for additional instructional time for students, a formal exam week will not be held this year. Any final assessments (not Regents), including projects or exams, will be conducted by teachers in class throughout the 4th quarter, and any associated grades for these items will be included in the 4th quarter average.

Currently, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) plans only to administer the June 2021 Algebra I, Earth Science, English Language Arts, and Living Environment Regents Exams to comply with federal mandates. Per NYSED, these exams can only be administered in person, in the school buildings as follows:

Any student enrolled in these Regents courses and who intended to take any of the above-mentioned Regents Exams, including students in 8th grade, are automatically eligible for an exemption, provided the student is passing the course. In addition, an overall passing course average will satisfy the diploma credit, and the Regents Exam score will not be factored into a student’s final course average, but it may appear on a student’s transcript. On Thursday, April 1st, a notice will automatically appear in your parent WITS account and prompt you to respond with you and your child’s decision regarding participation. We are asking for a response by Friday, April 23rd in order to plan accordingly for the necessary testing space(s).

For concurrent enrollment courses that provide students with dual college or university credit, a final exam score may be recorded and used by the college in calculating a course grade. The teachers of these courses will discuss the details in your child’s class and information will be sent home.

Updates will be shared as additional information becomes available. For questions or more information concerning testing or grades, please contact your principal, guidance counselor, or visit our frequently asked questions (FAQ) by using the following link: https://tinyurl.com/WCSDFAQ.
